Introduction

The Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) will attempt to improve the local rights of way network in Bournemouth and Poole. In this localised area alone there are 89 kilometres of rights of way and 126 kilometres of cycleways identifiying 450 legally recorded routes, which are subjected to 412,100 residents and over 8.52 million visitors per year. This document is aimed at the public to raise issues of safety, access for all, obstruction and misuse of the network as well as suggestions for potential actions and resources for improvements. Such a paper highlights various strategies the council is considering to improve the state of the rights of way network and also allows the public and key stakeholders to voice there opinion on such ideas, as well as suggesting their own.

Background

Public consultation is crucial to the development and implementation of the plan as the comments received will help to decide on where to improve and reclaim local rights of way, i.e footpaths, bridleways, restricted byways and cycleways for the people of Bournemouth and Poole to enjoy. This plan will also help to identify current and possible future needs for all users, including everyday trips to school, the shops, work, or the doctors as well as for recreation purposes.

This public consultation document is now available for local people and visitors to comment on the rights of way network. The purpose of this exercise is to identify both general and specific issues with the local network that affect peoples’ enjoyment of the area and more importantly the potential improvements that could or should be made to overcome these issues.

Comments on the rights of way network and this consultation document can be submitted by post (details included the document) or by email to: rightsofway@poole.gov.uk or rowip@bournemouth.gov.uk

The closing date for the consultation is Monday 21st January 2008.
