Mosaic and its uses

The Mosaic and Its Uses report describes the  Mosaic classification system, devised by Experian.

It was originally designed to profile consumers for market research purposes. Consumers were classified into 61 types. Each type is a member of one of 11 groups.

A wealth of demographic and socio-economic data is available for each type and comparisons can be made between types over a wide range of indicators.

Each postcode is assigned a Mosaic type and this type can provide invaluable insight into the likely characteristics of the residents living at the postcode. Clearly, not every resident will conform to these characteristics, but as a broad brush approach to the socio-demographic features one might expect, Mosaic appears to perform extremely well, based on what we know from other sources. Moreover, because types are assigned to postcodes and groups are comprised of distinct types, we can map the geographical distribution of both types and groups.
