Results

Poole, Dorset and Bournemouth Councils jointly commissioned questions in the Spring Survey to identify transport problems in between the A31 and the Poole/Bournemouth Conurbation.

When asked to put transportation issues in order of importance, the top 3 issues were identified as:

  • reducing the number of accidents (52%)
  • preserve public open spaces and countryside (48%)
  • improving the quality and coverage of bus services (44%)

We also asked Panel members to highlight the areas in Poole they consider suffer from high levels of congestion. The Upton by-pass, Blandford Road, Ringwood Road, the Shah of Persia junction, Wallisdown Road, Alder Road and Poole Road were identified as Poole’s main hotspots.

When asked what would be effective in alleviating congestion; ‘promoting rail based freight to reduce heavy goods vehicles’ followed by ‘a light rail scheme as an alternative to car use’ were identified as the most effective. ‘Promoting car sharing throughout the Borough’ came third, with ‘promotion of segregated bus routes’, ‘promoting park and ride schemes on the edge of the conurbation’ and ‘introducing High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on key roads’ identified as less effective options.

25% said that the most acceptable way to alleviate local transport problems would be to ‘introduce workplace car parking charging within the conurbation’. The least popular option was to reduce the number of car parking spaces throughout the Borough.
