Introduction
The Spring 2005 Survey was posted out to the panel in May.
Technique
Poole Opinion Panel.
Results
We asked about perceptions of crime to find out what concerns Poole residents and where we need to take action to reassure you that Poole is a safe place to live, work and play.
Anti-social behaviour (73%) is perceived as the biggest problem in Poole followed by drunkenness and associated bad behaviour (72%) and vandalism (69%).
Ian Cooke, Poole’s Anti Social Behaviour Co-ordinator, said: “Perceptions of anti-social behaviour are high in Poole, but the reality is that Poole has a very low crime rate, with reports of anti-social behaviour amongst the lowest in Dorset. The Council has just appointed 2 new Community Wardens who will work closely with communities and the police to identify and tackle anti-social behaviour and to bring the perpetrators to justice. A number of intervention programmes are currently taking place aimed at preventing anti-social behaviour amongst young people.”
‘Act Up’ is an interactive, restorative approach to tackling anti-social behaviour involving young people in typical scenarios which are acted out at the Streetwise Safety Centre. Each scene demonstrates the consequences of anti-social behaviour on victims and the impact is discussed afterwards.
The Council is working closely with the Police, Health Authority and the Fire Service through the Poole Safe Together Partnership (PSTP). The PSTP has been successful in reducing crime, and through joined-up working has been able to resolve issues and implement actions more quickly and effectively. Just over one in ten of respondents had heard of the PSTP, and next year we’ll monitor to see whether this has increased.
