Travelling Around Poole
Results from the transport section of the October 2004 survey show that the car is the most convenient way of getting around - whether it is to the local shops, travelling to Poole or to the supermarket. Use of public transport varies – with more people finding it easy to travel to and from the town centre, but fewer finding it easy to travel to work. You told us that you are more likely to walk or cycle to the local shops or post office.
Bus and car users were invited to take part in three discussion groups in February 2005 to discuss public transport issues in more detail. The main purpose of the groups was to find out about experiences and perceptions of taxis to make sure there are enough in the town, but the bus service was also discussed…
Taxis are generally used as a back up – to get home from a night out in town or travelling to and from a train station or airport. Generally the number of taxis is acceptable, but there are fewer taxis at the rank on the Quay in the evenings.
Councillor Ron Parker,
Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, said: “This research will help us target areas for improvement in order to provide a better service for Poole residents. There have been a number of improvements in recent months and we will be working with the bus companies to promote public transport, improve frequency, increase accessibility and provide a real alternative to the car. We realise that accurate timetable information is especially important and later this year we will be introducing SMS texting of bus information to keep you informed.”
The results have been shared with Wilts & Dorset
and taxi companies and some questions are included in the Spring 2005 Survey to assess your perceptions of the bus service and to find out what would encourage you to use the bus more.
